SKYPE ANDROID ACCESSIBILITY

In the summer of 2013, a new regulation was coming down for all communication apps called the Communications and Video Accessibility Act (CVAA). I stepped forward to be the accessibility design lead for the Android team, working with other accessibility leads and the legal team to outline the requirements for CVAA. I also had to learn the ins and outs of Android's screenreader, TalkBack.

Platforms: Android (Phone & Tablet)

I worked closely with the development team on the best way to define touch areas and TalkBack definitions (AKA, what the screen reader announces based on the selected UI control). My original documents outlined these definitions in a list format.

As the requirements evolved and became more clearly defined, I evolved it into a more parsable chart format.

With these documentation guidelines solid, I subsequently worked through the existing set of Android Skype UIs, reviewing them against CVAA standards, writing documentation, and occasionally redesigning areas of the UI to accommodate minimum button sizes or high contrast ratios. Finally, I trained the other Android designers on accessibility, so that all future design specs could include a section on accessibility.

The Android clients passed CVAA with flying colours.
